Update: The combat pet has been nerfed in 4.3 and no longer works outside of Azshara.
This is a rather great post by Thirk about how to get a slow-fall parachute and a level 11 combat pet.
The combat pet is a pretty sweet tip.
I don’t like the slow-fall parachute tip much as you’d have to park your toon on the top of the pillar to be able to use the item more than once (which means you’d be stranded there), so aside from doing it as a novelty there’s not much practical use for it (unless of course you have a p2p main that can take you up there whenever you want). Still not a bad idea though if you’re serious about wanting to get your Ironman achievement.
…but speaking of parachutes, there’s one in a chest outside Gnomer. Wowhead says its an Alliance-only level 24 quest, but apparently since 4.06, its in a chest outside Gnomer that anyone can loot. Definitely worth getting if you’re trying to get Ironman, imo.
Edit: just checked. The parachute is super easy for Horde to get. Just go to Grom’gol base in STV and use the transporter. It puts you inside Gnomer, right by the instance exit. The chest is like 50-60 yards away. The chest isn’t one that you actually open that needs a cast time…just click the chest and you get the chute. You’ll aggro a mob, so run out. Exiting through the transporter or dungeon portal both bring you back to Grom’gol base.
