PreMoP, as a tanking Druid, I never worried about Rage Potions. Rage just wasn’t an issue. Back then, we basically had 4 abilities Growl, Swipe, Mangle, and Maul. We’d use Growl as a pull. Swipe would keep the attention of pretty much every mob around us and we’d pop Swipe whenever it was up just to make sure we kept their attention. We’d use Mangle on whatever was focused on the by the group. Maul was purely used as a Rage dump.
Things are pretty different these days. Swipe is gone (well, it moved up to lvl 22), and it that’s HUGE. We no longer have any AoE ability so any group pull scatters to the other DPS’ers and the healer. This has made F2P Druid tanking WAY more difficult. The good thing is that Mangle no longer requires rage and is just on a timer so I can immediately open with that to grab one mob. That leaves Growl to grab another one and hopefully by then I’ll have enough Rage to use Maul on a 3rd. That Maul not only trips it’s 3 sec cooldown, but also dumps all my rage. I then have to tab around to bash on whatever mob I’m loosing threat the fastest on. Its all very frantic until the first couple mobs in the group are down.
In come the now valuable Rage Potion. Every second taken to get the group under control is pretty valuable. Having a stack of Rage Potions on my toolbar is now a must.
A couple other notes:
Since I’m no longer pulling with Growl, I’m using Moonfire pretty heavily to open. The only time I won’t use it is if I have a pretty good amount of Rage built up and don’t want to loose it by switching forms.
The above excludes Bear Hug, which is a damage-dealing stun that comes with Guardian spec. It’s also pretty much the only benefit of being Guardian vs Feral as the additional armor isn’t really necessary. It does add for another nice PvE opener and is great against PvP Druids as our roots are pretty worthless against them.
I’m also playing with this macro for PvP now that I’m playing with flag carrying as Guardian. It gives me a significant amount of Dodge for a few seconds and adds to my survivability. The problems with it are 1) it pops my healing potion cooldown and 2) Savage Defense needs 60 rage so I still have to wait a bit to build enough Rage to use the ability…so I’m not sure if I’ll really use it that much
/use Rage Potion
/cast Savage Defense
